Don’t Hesitate, Ya Gotta DELEGATE!
Do you delegate or do you try to do it all yourself? Do you feel like you’re “saving money” by trying to do everything? You may think, By being “busy”, you’re being productive, but there’s a difference. Today, women wear “busy” as a badge of honor. How many times have you heard someone complain “I am just SO busy!” Then, they proceed to list the abundance of things that bog them down in a day. Who wants to have a conversation with someone who just rants about how BUSY they are?! Not me, and you shouldn’t either.
You may be thinking “Ok Jenn, cool talk, but how do I make that happen?” First, you have to go pick up my very good friend’s book that is on that very subject ( https://www.amazon.com/Chief-Executive-Mom-Your-Business-ebook/dp/B07THML4YC ) May I introduce to you, your new handbook for delegation and making your mom life more enjoyable…… Chief Executive Mom by Jennifer L. Lopez! (you’ll thank me later). As much as you think you’re able to be great at all the things, you just can’t be! With me, I despise math and accounting, especially bookkeeping. For my sanity, I had to delegate that out for my business. Yes, I have to pay monthly for it, but it’s given me MORE time to focus on what I’m really passionate about and less time doing things I suck at. By finding a professional to do things in your business that aren’t in your wheelhouse, you make more time for things that ARE. I also have a service called AssistantPro come to my house and assist me in everyday things that my business keeps me too busy to do. I know some of you are thinking “I wish I could afford an assistant service!” If you can’t squeeze it into the budget, I get it, but investing in that book on the link above is WELL worth it.
ASK for help people! Ask your spouse, your kids, your parents, and best friends! They don’t know you need help if you don’t ask for it! It takes a village to raise a dog, let alone a whole family. Make your people feel like they are VALUED. Give them jobs to do to make the house function (this is especially for children and significant others). When someone feels like they are a part of something bigger than themselves, they want to join in. Don’t be a dictator, be a delegator, included them!
What about my ladies that take on 3 million projects at a time? One of the richest men in the world, Sir Richard Branson (Virgin INC), only concentrates on 2 projects at a time. Why does he do that? Because he feels he can only give his full self to up to two things at once. When you try and spread yourself too thin, everything you’re doing suffers. Personally, I’d rather be great at two things than mediocre at 5. Trust me, I know that we feel as if we have to be super women and do all the things, but we simply can’t.
It is OK to say NO to things that you don’t have time for! You may feel like a horrible person, but what makes you a horrible person is not respecting YOUR OWN TIME. There is nothing, I repeat, NOTHING wrong with saying no to something that you don’t have time for. Say that Becky needs you to make 30 pounds of potato salad for her baby shower last minute, but you all ready have 2 projects the kids need help with for school and you have to finish the favors for your Son’s Paw Patrol birthday party in a week. You obviously DON’T have time to make the potato salad, don’t be afraid to say NO. It can go something like this “Hey Becky, Im sorry, I really don’t have the time to make the potato salad. I know that Costco has great tasting potato salad, have you checked there?” A rush of relief that you didn’t add another task to your ever growing list will wash over you when you hang up the phone, trust me.
How about a business where you have a couple new projects going on already and there’s this exciting new venture you could get into, but you are knee deep in these other things? You know in your gut that you don’t have the time to really give this new venture your all and it’s OK to PASS! New Ventures come along Every. Single. Day. If you can’t do it right now, table the idea and it might be something that you can come back to later on, when your mind is clear and the ideas are fresh. Just because it looks great right now, doesn’t mean it’s the right time for you to start it. I had to wait a while to be able to dig into my blogging and Redwhiteandbethune.com . I still have a little bit to wait until I can finish the chapter on my current Company Jennspupnsuds.com and move on to the new things. Everything is about baby steps. We watch documentaries that makes it seem like life happens in an hour or less. Just remember that those documentaries took MONTHS (and even years) to make. Enjoy each chapter that you’re in. Relish in the journey because the destination will be here before you know it.
Today’s takeaway? DELEGATE! You need to assign tasks to others to help you get time back to focus on the things that you excel at. Don’t just “be busy”, aim for being productive! Once you get rid of the GUILT society puts on you to do EVERYTHING, a weight will be lifted off of your shoulders and you’ll feel accomplished. Go buy that book, it is absolutely life changing and eye opening!
